Aren't you supposed to be quiet while hunting? And isn't it the shooter's job to make sure his shot is clear?

Yup, even here in Texas where, as someone pointed out today, when two old guys go hunting and something like this happens before ten in the morning, it's senile dementia. After ten it's drinkin'.
